We are witnessing a decisive moment in the evolution of our global consciousness. Aesthetically, the Western canon is erasing thousands of years of artistic tradition around the globe. Politically, divisiveness is taking over the great global powers. A great consciousness breach is tearing humanity apart.

Western vs Eastern consciousness

Traveling all around the world is more than fancy landscapes and jaw-dropping waterfalls. Traveling around the world comes with the benefit of exploring radically different experiences of consciousness. Our journey from North America down to South America, to the other side of the world through Bali and Singapore, has allowed us to do just that.

From architecture, aesthetics, and morals to pure notions of progress and religiousness, the Western and the Eastern consciousness are radically different. While Western culture thrives in efficiency, maximum utility, and an overall instinct of survival, Eastern cultures trade technological advancement for a deeper connection with nature and the divine, with a deep sense of gratitude.

This is not to say that Eastern is better than Western. These cultural consciousness are simply reflections of the shared values of the majority of the people within their fabric. Psychologists such as Clare Graves have studied these values, explained in the Spiral Dynamics theory. In Spiral Dynamics, the stages are laid out as a sequence of evolutionary steps toward the integrated consciousness. Comprehending these stages is the first step to ascending the spiral!

Rational vs Spiritual consciousness

The Eastern vs Western dichotomy allows us to comprehend two of the first stages of consciousness. On one hand, Eastern tradition is deeply connected with the spiritual realm. Magical thinking dictates the morals and the themes of their artistic manifestations. On the other hand, Western traditions neglect their religious roots and focus on rationality and the cult of science. Logical reasoning dictates their morals and the limits of their experience.

Transitioning from magical to logical thinking is what is known as going from the amber to the orange level of consciousness. Of all the transitions available, this is one of the most radical and disruptive cultures can experience! Interestingly enough, it does not happen homogeneously, and the internal differences within a society can create divisiveness and radicalization. These differences are where most of today’s political and social conflict stems from!

Importantly, the nuances of each of these stages are more complex than saying spiritual vs rational. They are so deep that they condition how we see the world and interact with each other. Paradoxically, each one of these stages brings light on some aspects of the human experience but casts shadows over others! Understanding this is the key to evolving.

Complex as they are, these are only two of the many stages of consciousness available to humanity!
